The remit of Lo Pati, the Terres de l’Ebre Art Centre, is to be a catalyst at the core of the visual arts projects proposed and carried out in the south of Catalonia – specifically in the area consisting of the Montsià, Baix Ebre, Ribera d’Ebre and Terra Alta regions, collectively known as Terres de l’Ebre. We focus on holding art exhibitions, and on education, art production and creating an art collection and archives in accordance with our role in the Catalan Visual Arts Centres Network.
Our project’s uniqueness lies in the relationship between art and nature. The importance we afford this connection is based on two factors: the value of nature in, and for, the area where Lo Pati is located, and the complicity and closeness of the neighbouring Terres de l’Ebre Museum with which we collaborate closely.
The Terres de l’Ebre region has historically been an area where striking landscapes, such as the river Ebro and its Delta, the mountains of Els Ports Natural Park, and the Mediterranean sea, come together to create a crossroads for a contact between different cultures. The river Ebro has always been a trade route and a resource for agriculture. Nowadays, it is also used for leisure activities. We aim to take on its symbolic legacy as a link between territories, not only through its role in socio-economic development but also for its role as a crucible or meeting point for cultures. The river is a natural boundary, but a permeable one, allowing the porous exchange of information and cultural identities. This is the seed for our concept of Lo Pati as a crossroads where culture, nature and landscapes come together in a unique and specialised place.
The Lo Pati art centre is located in the centre of Amposta on the site of the old primary school’s playground – hence the name (Lo Pati means courtyard or playground in Catalan). The centre’s 584m2 exhibition area can be extended by adding on the Terres de l’Ebre Museum’s temporary exhibition hall – a further 200m2. This means that Lo Pati is one of the best-equipped art centres in this area. Lo Pati also has an artists’ residence located in Balada, a small hamlet in the heart of the Ebro Delta. Our offices, event hall, and storage facilities are shared with the Terres de l’Ebre Museum too.
