The conclusions of the "Art in a future status” conference, held in Amposta in 2003 and coordinated by Carles Guerra as a starting point for the centre, stated:
The aim of this art centre is to assess new ways in which contemporary art forms part of local environments. At a time when contemporary art is increasingly synonymous with a brand of globalization, it is necessary to study it from a local viewpoint and consider in what way art is integrated into specific economies and environments. The idea is not to make up for lost time by emulating public formation processes which the large institutions of the country have already carried out, but by planning strategies for the future linking cultural values with the values of the environment."
This view is reinforced by the thoughts of Manuel Olveria on the concept of art centres:
The conventional retrospective functions of art centres now give way to other more prospective activities (related to knowledge of the present, its conflicts and realities) that respond to the desire to create this present and establish mechanisms to nurture and strengthen cultural dynamism.
These two premises - the importance of connecting to the local environment and a prospective character – define the strategies for the activities Lo Pati carries out. The centre must provide for the whole of the Terres de l’Ebre region, promoting mechanisms of professional participation, expanding possibilities for learning, fostering co-productions and travelling exhibitions, and collaborating with the initiatives of other agents and towns in this area. This requires a specialized yet versatile profile, to cover this wide variety of functions. It involves offering a wide range of services and activities based on the promotion, production, creation, training, and research and documentation of visual arts, thought and contemporary culture.
Lo Pati must break away from the traditional limits of exhibition halls, and cater for new demands and social initiatives, using innovative methods and practices of cultural action. It has to become an engine for the generation and promotion of art, its documentation and analysis, a laboratory for research and creation, a site for education and interpretation, a participation and discussion forum, and finally a management and promotion office.
One of our chief priorities is to offer support and serve as a platform for young artists and their innovative ways of conceiving and creating visual productions. Our exhibitions must place the artist and different artistic groups in the spotlight, with the aim of achieving maximum interest in their work, both in a professional field and with the public in general.
The proximity and partnership with the Terres de l’Ebre Museum also enables the programming of joint activities which, starting out from visual and cultural creation and production, bring to the forefront themes such as heritage, ecology, identities, territory, sociability and so on. We also strive for an effective coordination with the Museum to propose educational activities for schools, communication strategies, and the management of art archives and document collections.
